Patriots knock off Bruins for state title
Mar 14, 2010 - by Cindy Peterson Bismarck Tribune

No stupid pasted-on grins this time.

The smiles were for real. Century was finally able to celebrate a Class A state title in girls basketball.

After a large collection of third-place trophies in the past decade, the Patriots came away with the big prize on Saturday night at the Class A state tournament. Century, the No. 1 seed from the West Region, conquered the Fargo South Bruins, the top team from the East Region, 60-50 at the Civic Center.

The Patriots (23-2) won their first state title since 1990 and their second overall.

"It's been 20 years since Century has done this," Century senior Carli Peterson said. "This is a big accomplishment for the whole school and the whole town. This whole town should be proud of us."

Coming into the tournament, the Patriots had reached the semifinals in six of the last seven seasons, placing second once and third five times.

South, meanwhile, is still looking for its first state title since 1994. The Bruins, who ended their season at 21-4, has advanced to the state-title game in four of the last seven years. South was upset by Bismarck High in last season's championship game for its only blemish on the season.

"I'm sick of losing this game," South coach Craig Flaagan said. "After the way we played last night (in the semifinals), we were feeling good about ourselves. Maybe that was the problem. We have come away with nothing. It's disappointing. The kids deserve better, but Century is the state champs."

The Patriots got a banner effort from sophomore Alexis Jacobs, who led her team in scoring with 20 points. Jacobs, who shot 4 of 8 from the 3-point line, accounted for all of Century's triples.

Senior Carli Peterson was a dominant force inside, adding 19 points.

Century coach Ron Metz credited his team in holding the Bruins to 50 points.

"South is a great offensive team," said Metz, who was named the state's coach of the year by his peers. "To hold them to 50 points is an accomplishment."

Century led 30-26 at halftime, but South made a charge in the second half by opening with a 9-2 run. Guard Meghan Roehrich gave the Bruins a 35-32 lead with 13:27 remaining following a Siri Burck steal. Roehrich took it to the left side in transition.

South's lead was short-lived. What followed was an eruption from the Patriots.

Peterson started a 16-0 Century run when she knifed through two defenders in the lane for a short pull-up jumper at 12:53.

Jacobs added two field goals, a free throw and a 3-pointer. Jacobs put back a Peterson miss with eight minutes remaining to give the Patriots a 48-35 lead.

South committed six turnovers during the stretch.

"We were stagnate there, and the girls responded in a time out," Metz said. "We executed our press offense. We hadn't been doing that and were playing right into their hands.

"Jacobs was a key. Teams are focused on stopping Carli and Madi (Buck). We needed that third person to be an offensive threat."

Jacobs gave Century the biggest lead of the contest with 6:19 to play on a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 53-38 advantage. South did manage to narrow the deficit to 54-46 with 3:03 to play when Roehrich drove the right side of the basket.

Peterson responded with a mid-range jumper with 2:33 to go from the high post while shooting over a defender. South never threatened after that.

Roehrich led South with 21 points and Burck had 20.

"Century has good players at every position," Flaagan said. "Tonight, we had two-and-a-half players who wanted to score."

Century handled South's smothering defense and traps with aplomb. Century did commit 17 turnovers, bending a little but not breaking. The Bruins were charted for 21 miscues.

"Century has seen pressure all year," Flaagan said. "If you're a good team, you will be able to handle pressure."

Century shot 21 of 47 from the field for 44.7 percent. The Bruins, who shot better than 51 percent in the first two games of the tournament, converted on 16 of 39 attempts from the field.

The Patriots close the season winning 23 of their last 24 games, including a steak of nine in a row.

Century avenged a loss from earlier in the season, losing to South 58-50.

Century kept the state title in the West Region. Fargo North was the last East Region team to bring home a state crown when it defeated Minot in the 2001 title game.

Century beats Fargo Shanley
Mar 13, 2010 - by Scott Throlson for the Bismarck Tribune

After surviving a frantic final 34 seconds, the Century Patriots could breathe a sigh of relief.

The West Region champions held on for a 61-58 semifinal victory over Fargo North in the Class A girls basketball tournament Friday at the Civic Center. A late 10-0 run gave the Patriots a double-digit lead, and they needed every bit of breathing room they could muster after the Spartans scrambled to get back into the game late.

"There was a little bit of panic there," Century senior forward Carli Peterson said.

Peterson scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the second half, and she hit a pair of clutch shots in the 10-0 run that gave the No. 2-ranked Patriots (22-2) a 59-49 lead with 1:35 remaining.

But No. 5 North closed on a 9-2 spurt to pull within one possession in the final seconds. Trailing 62-56 after an Alyssa Dehne basket, the Spartans forced a turnover and Haley Reinholz hit a long jumper from the wing. It was credited as a two-pointer, although North was hoping for a three. Down by three, the Spartans forced another turnover near midcourt and Dehne was fouled attempting a layup as the horn sounded.

Officials put 0.9 seconds on the clock, and Dehne missed both free throw attempts. Peterson pulled down the defensive rebound as the final buzzer sounded.

"They're a good team," Peterson said of the Spartans. "They're going to come back. They're never going to die."

"That's a good team over there," Century coach Ron Metz said. "They're the most improved team out of the EDC. We knew going in it was going to be a battle. They gave us everything we could handle."

"I thought (Reinholz's shot) was a three, but that's part of life," North coach Derek Ouren said. "I think this team has more heart than anybody else in the state."

The Patriots were able to win their eighth straight and their 22nd in 23 games thanks to a strong second half. The opening three minutes were vital. Century eliminated a 32-26 halftime deficit with a 6-0 spurt to start the half.

"The big thing was being able to take care of that six-point deficit as efficiently as we did," Metz said. "We talked about it at halftime that we had to get some better stops defensively and then take care of the ball and get some better looks offensively in the first three minutes."

"We knew we had to come out stronger," said Peterson, a Miss Basketball finalist. "We started strong but then they got a big run on us and we had to do the same thing."

The Patriots were more patient executing their offense, which led to some open looks.

"We were able to find some mismatches for Carli and Madi (Buck)," Metz said. "They got some easy looks because we were patient."

Buck finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Alexis Jacobs scored 10 points, including a big three-pointer just before the half to pull the Patriots within six at the break. A 24-4 North run had given the Spartans a 32-22 lead with a minute and a half before intermission.

"As a team, we had a lot of people step up for us," Metz said.

Reinholz led the Spartans (15-9) with 12 points, Tana Tescherndorf had 11 and Angie Waller had 10.

The Patriots take on Fargo South at in the championship game, while the Spartans face Grand Forks Red River for third place.

Century beats Fargo Shanley
Mar 12, 2010 - by Scott Throlson for the Bismarck Tribune

Defense ruled the opening game of the Class A girls basketball tournament.

Century held off a late charge by Fargo Shanley for a 52-45 quarterfinal victory on Thursday at the Civic Center.

With two of the stingiest defenses in the state squaring off, the offenses found it tough going.

"With the defense both teams were playing, you needed to work for the points you got, that's for sure," Century coach Ron Metz said.

Century led the West Region in scoring defense, allowing 48.5 points per game, and Shanley ranked second in the East (47.6). Both teams showed why in the state tourney opener.

"It was a 40s game, which was right where we wanted it to be," Shanley coach Tim Jacobson said. "We got down, we were able to fight our way back into it and we were right in it until the final buzzer."

The No. 2-ranked Patriots won their seventh straight and their 21st in 22 games, but it wasn't easy. After building a 12-point lead with under four minutes remaining, Century had to fend off a late comeback bid by the Deacons.

"We had to fight through," Century sophomore forward Alexis Jacobs said. "We had to make free throws and concentrate on making good plays, not just running around."

Jacobs finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for Century (21-2). Ann Govig added 10 points, and Miss Basketball finalist Carli Peterson had nine points, six rebounds and three assists.

"We had to keep doing the other things it takes to win if we can't score," Jacobs said.

The Patriots held Shanley to 28 percent shooting (16 for 57), including 18 percent (3 for 17) from 3-point range. They forced 16 turnovers and controlled the glass, outrebounding the Deacons 43-37.

Govig hit a low post shot and a layup to start a 10-2 run that gave the Patriots a 43-31 lead with 4:36 to go. But Shanley battled back, pulling within five points at 48-43 with 80 seconds left before Century held on for the win.

"We just have to make free throws," Metz said. "We've got the lead, they've got to foul and we have to make free throws."

The Patriots hit 22 of 35 free throw attempts, but came up with some big ones when they needed them. Hannah Jeske iced the win with four straight in the final 50 seconds.

Nicole Carew led the Deacons (13-10) with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Sophie Kenney also finished with 17 points.

The Patriots take on Fargo North today in the semifinals. Shanley will square off with Minot in a consolation semifinal.

"We can put this one behind us," Jacobs said. "We have to have our ‘A' game and play the way we usually play."

Peterson among Miss Basketball Finalists
Mar 11, 2010 - by AP

BISMARCK (AP) - Five players have been named finalists for the North Dakota Miss Basketball award.

The North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association selected two players from Class A and three from Class B for consideration.

The award is given annually to the top senior athlete as voted by statewide NDAPSSA members.

This year's finalists are Carli Peterson of Century, Siri Burck of Fargo South, Eli Benz of Kidder County, Stef Bohrer of Hazen and Casey Geffre of Hankinson.

Peterson, a 6-foot forward, is averaging 14.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the second-ranked Patriots, who are 20-2 heading into this week's Class A state tournament in Bismarck.

Benz, a 5-11 post, averaged 20.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.8 blocks per game for Kidder County, which placed seventh in last week's Class B state tournament in Minot. Benz played in three state tournaments, and was named MVP in 2009 after leading the Pirates to their first state title. She was named to the all-tournament team in 2009 and 2010.

Bohrer, a 5-9 post, averaged 15.8 points and 10.1 rebounds, and shot 65 percent from the floor. She helped lead the Bison to the 2009 Class B state tournament, where they placed third, and to the 2010 Region 7 championship game. She scored 62 points in last year's state tournament.

Burck, a 6-foot guard, is averaging 14.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists for the third-ranked Bruins, who are playing in the Class A state tournament this weekend.

Geffre, a 5-9 forward, averaged 19.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.8 steals per game this winter. She helped lead the Pirates to the 2008 and 2009 Class B state tournaments.

The winner will be announced and the award presented Saturday following the girls title game at the state Class A tournament.

Century routs Williston for title
Mar 7, 2010 - by Cindy Peterson Bismarck Tribune

A No. 7 seed looked pretty intimidating to Century guard Alexis Jacobs.

The Williston Coyotes upset the No. 2 and 3 seeds at the West Region girls basketball tournament. Jacobs and the No. 1 Century Patriots didn't want to be the next victim on the Coyotes' list.

Jacobs and the Patriots came away unscathed with a 66-44 victory on Saturday night at the Civic Center to give Century its second straight regional title.

"We were nervous," said Jacobs, a 5-foot-11 sophomore. "We didn't know how they would come out. They were hitting everything in their other games. We played our normal game - how we play."

The Patriots enter next week's Class A state tournament as the No. 1 seed from the West while the Coyotes are seeded second. The state tournament will be held at the Civic Center.

Century coach Ron Metz wasn't going to take a seventh seed lightly, especially after watching back-to-back upsets.

"They are a different team from what we played early in the season and later in the season," Metz said. "The biggest thing is we made the state tournament. It's a blessing to have the No. 1 seed."

After two emotional days, Williston coach Darryl LaDue said his team was spent.

"The emotional roller coaster took its toll on us," he said. "Our girls were drained. Century has a good program, and they are intimidating. They made us rush our shots."

Jacobs led the Patriots with 19 points and netted 4 of 6 attempts from the 3-point line. Carli Peterson and Madi Buck added 11 points each.

Jacobs and Hannah Jeske, who drained two 3s, helped open up the inside game for the Patriots.

"We were mostly focused on getting the ball inside," Jacobs said. "Everybody was moving and that helps our shooting. When everybody is moving it helps us get it inside. I felt really comfortable shooting the ball. I was super excited for this game."

The Patriots wanted to come out with a strong start and they succeeded. Jacobs' putback gave the Patriots a 15-5 lead at 11:46 and they never looked back. Jacobs scored seven of her points during the spurt.

"It was the fact that we held them to five points in that period of time," Metz said. "They have put up 45 points in a half in this tournament."

Century led 28-16 at halftime.

Jackie Lee led Williston with 11 points.

Century beats Mandan in semifinal
Mar 6, 2010 - by Scott Throlson for the Bismarck Tribune

A fast start and another strong defensive effort helped Century earn a spot in the state tournament.

A day after the Patriots shook off a slow start and had to grind out a quarterfinal victory over Dickinson, the state's second-ranked team blitzed Mandan early.

Century's swarming, stifling defense held the Braves without a field goal for 10 minutes early on, paving the way to a 56-42 semifinal victory in the West Region tournament on Friday at the Civic Center.

"One of the things we've got a reputation for is not coming out strong," Patriots coach Ron Metz said. "It was nice to see the getting after it early."

Century turned a one-point game into a 20-point advantage with a 20-1 run that spanned nearly nine minutes. They held the explosive Braves to three free throws in a span of 10:46.

"We knew we needed to start aggressively instead of letting them stay with us," senior forward Carli Peterson said.

Defense keyed another victory for Bismarck Century (19-2). The top-seeded Patriots will take on seventh-seeded Williston today at 6 p.m. in the West Region championship game. Williston has knocked off No. 2 seed Turtle Mountain and No. 3 seed Minot on back-to-back days.

"From the start of practice in November, we've been saying we need to be a great defensive team every night," Metz said. "We haven't been, but we've been progressively getting better. I just hope that keeps up because right now, that's really helped us the first two games (of the tournament."

Century stretched its winning streak to five games by holding the Braves to 25 percent shooting (9 for 36) for the game and forcing 16 turnovers.

"We just started playing more aggressively," Peterson said. "We took away their passing lanes, got some steals and put them in for layups."

Peterson led a balanced offensive attack for the Patriots. She hit 8 of 16 shots and finished with 17 points. Peterson also had a game-high

12 rebounds, blocked two shots and picked up three steals.

Madi Buck finished with 9 points and 11 rebounds, Alexis Jacobs had 8 points and 10 rebounds and Nikki Huelsman also scored 8 points.

The Patriots outrebounded the Braves 47-22, which included 20 offensive rebounds. "With our size, we need to be able to control the boards," Metz said.

Mandan finished the first half on a 10-2 run, pulling within 12 at

30-18 at the break. Mic Longtin hit two of her four 3-pointers in that stretch.

The fifth-seeded Braves (9-12) chipped away at the deficit in the second half as Steph Pedersen scored 12 of her 17 points after the break. But Mandan was never able to get the deficit below eight points and the Patriots finished off the win.

"They have some good three-point shooters," Peterson said. "We knew we had to step out and try to shut them down."

Pedersen led Mandan with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and four steals. Longtin added 13 points.

"We knew Mandan was going to come back and make some runs," Metz said.

"You get to this point of the season and you're not going to blow anyone away. You're going to get everyone's best shot."

Mandan plays Turtle Mountain at 6:15 p.m. in a state-qualifying game.

Century girls beat Dickinson
Mar 5, 2010 - by Steve Schroeder Bismarck Tribune

Century 57, Dickinson 39

The Century girls basketball team has allowed the fewest points of any West Region team all season due to its swarming defense and effective press. That may have been difficult to surmise as much from watching the first five minutes of the West Region tournament quarterfinal Thursday.

The defense returned soon enough and created some offense on the way to top-seeded Century's 57-39 victory over eighth-seeded Dickinson.

"I think we just came out early with some nerves," Century coach Ron Metz said. "We seemed to be overanxious on offense. The weird part though was that we had the opposite problem on defense: We were slow getting to our defensive rotations."

Century senior Madi Buck got things going with a low-post put-back to tie the game, the first of her eight first-half points. Buck then stole the ball and sprinted out to an easy layup to begin an 11-0 run.

Senior guard Nikki Huelsman finished the run by stealing two passes off the top of the key on her way to back-to-back layups, giving Century a 19-8 lead with 5:45 left in the first half.

"If we bring intense defense, it's going to create easy fast-break points," Buck said. "Our defense is what got us here, and we have to continue playing hard on that end if we're going to win WDA."

Century finished with 24 points off of turnovers.

Dickinson was able to come close on a few occasions after the big run by the Patriots, but Century's defense always clamped down just enough to keep the Patriots in the lead.

The first of Dickinson's runs came with a 6-0 surge with 3:35 left to end the first half. Century's 22-12 lead was cut to 22-18 with Buck watching from the bench after picking up her second foul.

Dickinson was able to keep its offense going to begin the second half, but the Midgets were never quite able to get over the hump. The closest they came was 34-33 after a pair of free throws by senior Ashley Krieg with 8:47 left in the game.

Century's defense again kicked in, however. A steal leading to a breakaway layup from Huelsman started a 15-2 run which put the game out of reach. Huelsman finished with 15 points, eight of them created by her four swipes.

Buck had 10 points and seven rebounds to go along with her seven steals. Fellow senior Carli Peterson contributed a team-high 16 points, 13 in the second half, and five rebounds.

"At this time of the year, you need your seniors," Metz said. "They're the ones that have already been through this, so when they come out focused and composed like they were today, it makes it easier for the rest of the girls to follow their lead."

Dickinson's Jess Herauf, the fourth-leading scorer in the West Region, was held to 3-for-10 shooting from the field. She finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three steals before fouling out with 3:12 left in the game.

Century girls win
Feb 26, 2010 - by Steve Thomas Bismarck Tribune

Century 52, Bismarck 34

Century's second-ranked girls closed the regular season with a third straight win, creating opportunities galore with aggressive defense.

The Patriots forced 15 turnovers in opening a 24-17 halftime lead and totaled 22 takeaways for the night.

Senior frontcourt aces Madi Buck and Carli Peterson led the Century attack with 15 and 12 points, respectively, and Buck pulled down 11 rebounds.

Still, coach Ron Metz was left to wonder what might have been. There were plenty of missed opportunities as the Patriots shot just 39 percent and gave the ball away 24 times.

"There were too many unforced turnovers," Metz said.

But Metz said there were also a lot of turnovers related to aggressiveness rather than carelessness. "Sometimes the girls are trying to do too much. Instead of making the easy play they're trying to make the spectacular play," he noted.

Metz said the avalanche of turnover was atypical.

"We've been doing a lot better job of taking care of the ball lately," he said. "Sometimes things like this happen. We've just got to be a little more patient."

Anna Hruby led the way for Bismarck with eight points as the Demons shot just 30 percent.

BlueJays give No. 1 Pats a scare
Feb 17, 2010 - by David Griswold Jamestown Sun

Two weeks ago, the Jamestown girls' basketball team knocked off the No. 5 team in the state, but on Tuesday the Blue Jays nearly trumped that feat.

Jamestown hosted top-ranked Bismarck Century and through 32 minutes of play the teams were deadlocked.

Jamestown's Alex Hanson hit a two with 3:20 to play to knot the score at 52-all, but down the stretch the Patriots proved why they're the No. 1 team in the state by escaping with a 60-57 win.

"We had a few crucial turnovers down the stretch, but we were in the game," said JHS coach Andy Skunberg. "The girls fought back. We have a no-quit team."

The Jays finished the game with 27 turnovers to the Patriots' five.

"Down the stretch we just couldn't get the shots to fall and had some turnovers," Skunberg said. "They're No. 1 for a reason. Down the stretch they did what they had to do."

Jamestown trailed the entire game, but with 4:18 to play Melissa McMillan poured in a three from the right corner to knot the score at 50-all, the first tie since being 2-all to start the game.

"We were down 11 and we came back," said Skunberg. "We've been going through adversity the last couple of games getting down and they don't quit. They battle back and that's good to see."

The teams exchanged baskets to make the score 52-all but then with the help of standout Madi Buck the Patriots outscored the Jays 8-5 in the final minutes.

Buck scored four of her game-high 25 points in the final three minutes to help Century improve to 15-2 on the year and 13-1 in the West Region. With the loss, Jamestown drops to 6-11 overall and 5-9 in the West.

"It's a momentum builder for us," said Skunberg. "Last time they drilled us by 27 and (this time) we played with them. Hopefully this gives us some confidence."

Kara Nygaard topped the Jays with 17 points in the game, including 13 in the second half.

Century held a nine-point edge with 13 minutes to play, but Nygaard scored 10 points over the next seven minutes to nearly erase the deficit with 6:18 to play. Nygaard drove to the hoop on an inbound pass from senior Brooke Winson to make the score 48-46 in favor of the Patriots and just two minutes later the score was tied.

Jamestown outscored the Patriots 31-30 in the second half after trailing 30-26 at the half.

Century led by as many 11 in the first after holding the Jays scoreless for nearly four minutes midway through the break.

The Patriots jumped out to an early 10-4 lead after Buck hit a free throw to cap off a three-point play with 13:23 to play in the half.

Jamestown stormed back to pull within two points after a Hanson basket with just under 10 minutes to go.

The Jays then went cold, scoring just four points over the next six minutes, while the Patriots went on to build a 25-14 lead.

Nygaard ended the drought with a shot off the glass to spark a 10-5 run to end the half.

Winson hit a deep three as time expired to make the score 30-26 going into the break.

Winson led Jamestown with five assists to go along with her 13 points in the game. Hanson also had 13 after scoring 11 in the final 18 minutes.

Alexis Jacobs scored 11 for Century after hitting on a team-high three triples.

"We're still not there yet," said Skunberg. "We've still got to do some little things to get us over the hump and maybe we can win some of these games."

Century's top-ranked girls downed St. Mary's' 51-38 in the first game of the night.

The win was the 14th in a row for the Patriots. No. 1-rated Century hasn't lost since its season-opener against Fargo South.

Six-foot senior Madi Buck proved to be the Century stalwart, scoring 12 points and yanking down 15 rebounds. A.J. Jacobs and Carli Peterson followed with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

St. Mary's got seven points and 11 rebounds from six-foot junior Alexa Dvorak and nine points from sophomore guard Rachel Power.

Century girls beat Mandan
Feb 3, 2010 - by SCOOTER PURSLEY Bismarck Tribune

The Mandan high school gym has seen its share of transition basketball - just not by the visiting teams.

Top-ranked Century ran the floor with ease for much of Tuesday's game while posting a 63-56 West Region girls basketball victory over the Braves.

In doing so, the Patriots (11-0 West Region, 13-1 overall) extended their winning streak to 13 games, while snapping Mandan's three-game winning streak.

"We were going to take what they were giving us in transition, but we were not going to force things," Century coach Ron Metz said.

"Every game is different but for the most part, that's what we do."

Century led by 16 points with 10:04 to play and needed almost all of that to withstand an outburst by Mandan's Steph Pedersen.

The junior guard scored 23 of her 33 points in the second half, including Mandan's final 19 points. She single-handedly put Mandan in position to pull off a shocking comeback by outscoring the Patriots 16-6 during a rally that drew the Braves within 59-56 with 1:08 left.

"The second half we knew we had to go hard to the hole or kick it out," Pedersen said. "I was surprised because I thought they would squeeze in, but I kept taking it in and getting the shot off."

Century fought off the Braves' comeback from the free throw line. The Patriots made 13 of their final 15 attempts down the stretch and finished the game 29-for-38.

"You don't really want to depend on those. We should have had a few better looks inside," Metz said.

Century didn't get off to a great start, but led 6-0 before Mandan got on the board with 14:42 left in the first half. The Braves (5-6 West Region, 7-7 overall) got within 8-6 behind Pedersen, but turnovers and miscues on the offensive end kept them from sustaining the threat.

The Patriots led 32-15 but Mandan scored five points in the final minute to cut the gap to a dozen.

Mandan shot just 14 percent (3-21) in the first half, while Century hit at a 61 percent clip.

"At halftime I told the girls that we're only down 12 and we shot 14 percent," Mandan coach Marv Pedersen said. "We tried to be upbeat and positive because we were right there."

Century forced 13 first-half turnovers while racing out to a 32-20 lead. The Patriots had a 17-7 lead in points off turnovers at the break.

But the visitors went into cruise control in the second half, giving Mandan just enough breathing room to stay alive.

The Braves hung around in the second half until a mini run by Century, that included Ann Govig's basket at 13:46, made it 46-30.

Century made only three more field goals and none for 7:36 while Pedersen caught fire.

Century exchanged Pedersen baskets for free throws until Carli Peterson hit a layup for a 61-56 lead with 41 seconds left. Hannah Jeske hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to lock it up.

Peterson led Century with 16 points and Tyler Loraas added 13 off the bench.

Pedersen had six rebounds, three assists and eight steals to go with her 33 points for Mandan and Amanda Vander Wal added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Century girls win
Jan 29, 2010 - by STEVE THOMAS Bismarck Tribune

Century 66, Dickinson 45

Dickinson, playing without the injured Jess Herauf, the team's leading scorer, stayed in the game for much of the first half.

But Century's full-court pressure eventually squeezed the Midgets into submission.

The Patriots forced six turnovers and outscored the Midgets 16-2 to take a 38-23 lead into halftime.

Dickinson drew no closer than nine points after intermission. The Midgets' largest deficit was 66-42 with 3:12 to play.

"They had a 16-2 run and a lot of them were uncontested turnovers," Dickinson coach Greg Jung noted. "... A lot of it had to do with Century. They're the best team in North Dakota and I don't care what anybody says. They've got all those great athletes and they really make it tough when they defend like they do."

For the game, Dickinson committed 22 turnovers to 25 for Century. But the Patriots dominated the boards 41-28 and shot 50 percent.

Senior post Carli Peterson said turnovers are the cost of doing business when Century is trying to force the tempo.

"Twenty-five is about 10 too many for us, but when you're playing aggressively and pressing you're going to have turnovers," she said.

Peterson finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Madi Buck, Nikki Huelsman and A.J. Jacobs reached double figures with 16, 16 and 13, respectively.

Peterson said that type of balance makes for a happy team.

"The more players who make baskets the better," she said. "It's a team thing. We have that unity out there and we're all making shots.

"In order to shut us down you have to shut down all our players," she added.

Brie Lynch tallied 13 points to lead Dickinson, which lost for the fifth straight time.

Century, 9-0 in the West Region, won its 11th straight game.

Headed in right direction
Jan 27, 2010 - by STEVE THOMAS Bismarck Tribune

Disappointment doesn't have to be a permanent condition.

Three-sport athlete Nikki Huelsman began her senior year with a dismal cross country season, but her basketball season has taken a decidedly positive turn.

The top-ranked Patriots take a 10-game winning streak into today's 6 p.m. West Region matchup with Dickinson at the Linette Olson gym. The No. 3-ranked CHS boys will follow at about 8 p.m.

Century hasn't lost since its opening game of the season, a 58-50 setback at the hands of No. 2-ranked Fargo South.

"I think we're getting better," Huelsman, a 5-foot-7 guard, said as she looked back on the most recent CHS victory, a 55-46 triumph over Bismarck. "We're improving in a lot of different ways, especially our defense."

Century, second in the region in scoring, had a tough night offensively against archrival Bismarck, but turned the game around with an effective press.

"The only thing that allowed us to win that (Bismarck) game was turnovers. ... It's a relief to know that if you work hard on defense it pays off," Huelsman added. "You can't always rely on offense to win you games."

Huelsman said she's amazed at how quickly her senior year is slipping by. "Somebody told me we're halfway through the season," she said. "It's kind of scary, but we still have to keep working toward the next game and keep improving."

That continual improvement is directed at one thing - a berth in the state championship game. Huelsman, a third-year varsity basketball player, has played on teams that finished fifth and third in the state Class A tournament.

"We want to be in that last game of the season," she said. "The goal is to get to that final game and battle it out from there."

Huelsman said she plans to run cross country and track in college. Thus she piled up the summer miles in preparation for her senior cross country season. The preparation went for naught, however, when she fell victim to a parasite that made it hard to keep food down. Her weight dipped below 100 pounds and at one point during the season she had to stop running entirely.

She placed 21st in the state meet, compared to an 11th-place finish as a junior. She continued training after the high school season and won the open race at the Nike Heartland Regional at Sioux Falls, S.D., in mid-November.

The basketball season also opened on a downer. Century lost its opener to South and point guard Erika Jossart suffered a season-ending knee injury in the process. Then starting post Madi Buck suffered a knee injury and missed six games.

Since then, however, the Patriots have rallied, reeling off 10 wins in a row, eight of them in regional play.

Huelsman, in her first year as a starter after two seasons as a much-used reserve, said Century's ability to bounce back from the Jossart injury is a testimony to the team's depth.

"With Madi back we're getting better and better," Huelsman said. "... We've focused on having a deep bench. ... It's nice to know we have that many people on the bench who can go out and play."

Since the injury to Jossart, sophomore Hannah Jeske has moved into the starting lineup along with seniors Huelsman, Buck and Carli Peterson, and sophomore A.J. Jacobs. Sophomores Ann Govig and Jordan Adolf and junior Tyler Loraas have contributed significantly off the bench. With Peterson (17.0 ppg), Buck (12.3) and Jacobs (11.8) scoring in double figures, Century is averaging 65.1 points per game. The Patriots are surrendering 49.9 points per game, also second in the region.

Huelsman is scoring at a 9.3 pace with 3.6 rebounds 2.4 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Her 47 percent shooting from the field puts her in the region's top 10.

According to Huelsman, the team's greatest strength doesn't appear on a statistics sheet. It's known as chemistry.

"We all just fit. There are no cliques. Everybody gets along," she said. "You can't have drama on a team. That just messes things up. ... We're a family. That's the way I would put it."

While Huelsman majors in the running sports, she said basketball is not merely fun and games sandwiched between two seasons of hard work.

"The reason I like basketball is that it's completely different from running. It's a break from running," she said. "... But I like to win. I don't like going into something and not giving it my all. I'm harder on myself than anyone else. That's the way it's always been."

Because this is going to be Huelsman's final season of competitive basketball, she's determined to go out on a positive note. That means playing the 6 p.m. game at the Civic Center on March 13.

"You can never get a game back. It's a little scary," she said. "I'm going to run in college but this is it for basketball. I really want to play for a championship in basketball so I have something to remember it by."

Century girls win
Jan 22, 2010 - by STEVE THOMAS Bismarck Tribune

Century 55, Bismarck 46

Second-ranked Century struggled in the first half, but used devastating defense to turn the corner in the second half against the archrival Demons.

Century broke away from a 22-22 halftime standoff by forcing five turnovers in the opening two and one-half minutes of the second half. A basket by Carli Peterson and a 3-pointer by A.J. Jacobs enabled Century to open a 27-24 gap.

The Patriots led the rest of the way, eventually stretching the advantage to 52-36 on a pair of Madi Buck free throws with 2:29 to play.

Turnovers proved to be Bismarck's undoing. The Demons coughed the ball up 29 times, 16 times in the second half. When BHS was able to run its offense the results were good - 60 percent shooting in the second half, 46 percent for the game.

A.J. Jacobs scored 18 points, 12 in the second half, to pace Century, which has won 10 straight games. Peterson added 11 for the Patriots.

Anna Hruby led the way for Bismarck, scoring 10 points to go with 14 rebounds. Chelsea Lingle also tallied 10 points for the Demons.

Jacobs, a 5-11 sophomore, hurt Bismarck from the perimeter and inside.

"I got in my rhythm and the shots started falling," she said of her second-half surge. "I worked really hard at trying to get the ball in the post."

At halftime, Jacobs said the emphasis was on basics.

"We needed to pick it up and do the critical things like boxing out, getting to the offensive and defensive boards and playing defense," she said.

Patriots sweep Blue Jays
Jan 12, 2010 - By SCOTT THROLSON Bismarck Tribune

Patriots 62, Blue Jays 34

The state's second-ranked team kept its winning streak alive.

But coach Ron Metz wasn't thrilled with the way his Patriots got the job done. Century ran its winning streak to eight games and remained unbeaten in the West Region. But the Patriots' 62-34 victory didn't provide a lot of material for the highlight reels.

"Sometimes that's what you have to do," Metz said. "We struggled. When we did execute things, we executed them well. We just didn't do it often enough."

Carli Peterson scored 19 points and Hannah Jeske added 11 for the Patriots, who shot 51.7 percent (15 for 29) from the field in the second half to pull away.

While Century struggled offensively at times, they also made things tough on the Blue Jays.

Century forced Jamestown into committing 29 turnovers and held the Blue Jays to 30 percent shooting from the field. During one 12-minute stretch of the first half, Century limited Jamestown to two points in turning a 6-6 tie into a 22-8 advantage. Jamestown managed just seven points over the game's final 10 minutes.

"We made them run the shot clock down," Metz said. "I still would have liked to have been even more aggressive. But we made enough stops, we made them run the clock down and we made them take tough shots."

Kara Nygaard finished with 23 points for the Jays.

Century sweeps Turtle Mountain in hoops
Jan 08, 2010 - By MICHAEL WEBER Bismarck Tribune

If he could, Century girls basketball coach Ron Metz would bottle the first half of Friday night's game against Turtle Mountain. Here's why.

Second-ranked Century scored 48 points while building a 22-point halftime lead on the way to a convincing 82-60 win over the visiting Braves in a West Region game at Linette Olson Gymnasium.

The Patriots improved to 5-0 in region play and 7-1 overall after dominating the team that was picked to finish second in the region in a preseason poll.

"I'll take a half like that every time," Metz said. "The offense, defense, rebounding - everything about the half was good. I couldn't have asked for a better 18 minutes of basketball."

Neither could sophomore Ann Govig, one of four Patriots to score in double figures.

"I was a little surprised by it because (the Braves) are such a good team, but I know we're capable of it," said Govig, who scored all 12 of her points in the first half. "We came ready to play. We knew what we had to do, and we got it done."

Alexis Jacobs led the Patriots with 17 points, and Carli Peterson and Nikki Huelsman added 16 and 10, respectively. In addition, Jacobs collected 10 rebounds to lead a commanding 46-23 Century advantage on the boards.

Century also welcomed back senior standout Madi Buck, who had been sidelined since the second game of the season because of an injury.

Buck finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

"It's great to have Madi back again," Metz said. "She's such a solid player. We're definitely a much better team with her in there."

The Century boys later made it a sweep with a 59-53 win in the nightcap.

It was all Century in the opener after the Braves jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Peterson scored seven points and Govig added four in a 13-2 run that put the Patriots up 15-9. After Turtle Mountain's Mariah Marcellais drained a 3-pointer, the Patriots put together a decisive 23-0 run that spanned just over four minutes.

A Huelsman basket with 4:58 left in the half capped the run.

"We did a nice job finishing at our end, but the real key for us in that run was our defense," Metz said. "We shut down a very good offensive team for four minutes, and a lot of stops led to transition points."

The half ended 48-26. The 48 points was just 10 shy of the Patriots' per-game average.

"It was just one of those starts you hope to have in a big game," Govig said. "We needed a strong start against (the Braves). We came out and set the tone right away."

The Century offense cooled off some in the second half, but the Patriots never let the Braves get closer than 20 points.

Though the win was a convincing one, Metz said Turtle Mountain will remain a scary team in his eyes.

"(The Braves) are a quick, athletic team with good shooters and a good inside game," Metz said. "They had a rough night tonight, but we know they're a good team. We expect them to be in the thick of it in the end."

The Patriots have won seven straight games since dropping their season opener to No. 1-ranked Fargo South, and losing their starting point guard Erika Jossart to a season-ending knee injury.

"The injuries to Erika and Madi derailed our original plans, but we've been adjusting well," Metz said. "We still have some work to do, but tonight's win showed us what we're capable of."

Peterson brings her game to new level
Dec 27, 2009 - STEVE THOMAS - Bismarck Tribune

What was expected to be a dream basketball season for four Century seniors started out more like a nightmare.

Before the girls basketball season was a week old, two of Century's returning seniors were watching from the sidelines.

"It's definitely a lot different without Madi (Buck) and Erika (Jossart)," senior Carli Peterson said. "This was our dream season - us four seniors playing together - but I guess things don't always go your way."

Indeed.

During the first weekend of the season Jossart, the starting point guard, was lost for the season with a torn knee ligament. Buck, a six-foot all-state player, is sidelined with a meniscus injury in one knee. She's expected to return, but it's on a wait-and-see basis.

That left just half the quartet of seniors - the six-foot Peterson and 5-6 guard Nikki Huelsman - to carry on.

Carry on they have. Century stands 4-1 going into tonight's game at West Fargo and is ranked second in the state in the Class A girls basketball poll.

CHS coach Ron Metz said Peterson and Huelsman have met the leadership demands placed on them and several young players have responded well to being rushed along.

A.J. Jacobs, a standout last season as a freshman, was a known quantity. But sophomores Hannah Jeske and Ann Govig and junior Tyler Loraas have had to grow up fast.

"We saw what the three freshmen who played varsity last year did, and we saw the sophomores last year, and we knew we were going to be OK," Metz said. "We've had to accelerate the timetable. ... We have girls now starting who were going to be sixth, seventh and eighth (in the rotation)."

The Patriots' lone loss is a 58-50 setback at the hands of Fargo South in their opener. Jossart was injured against South and Buck was hobbled the next day against Fargo Shanley.

Peterson, a third-year starter, has been surrounded by talented players - Buck, Jossart, Tricia Sorensen, Tasha Michelsen and Jacobs among them - ever since she joined the varsity as a freshman. Now she suddenly finds herself to be a mainspring instead of a cog.

"(Jossart and Buck) were a big part of our team. ... I just knew someone had to step up, and I'm trying to fit into that leadership role right now," Peterson said.

That position consists of both team building and athletic facets.

When it comes to veteran presence, Metz said the list is getting short.

"Now she and Nikki (Huelsman) are the senior captains," the coach said. "... Both of them have more leadership responsibility. As captains they're in that role 24/7. ... Carli and Nikki are pretty much it on the floor."

In Century's three West Region victories, Peterson has scored 28, 23 and 20 points to push her season's average to 19.2 points per game. That's a healthy jump from her averages of 10.2 as a junior and 11.7 as a sophomore.

"I've just been getting the ball a lot more, and it's going my way right now," she said. "... Without Madi and Erika, someone has to fill in for them."

Metz said he was surprised at how fast Peterson adapted to becoming a primary offensive threat. "We didn't expect her to come out and put up 20 every night, but we knew we were going to have to replace some scoring," he said. "... And it's not as though we're running a lot of special sets for her. She's just looking more for her shot and opportunities to score."

A post player her entire varsity career, Peterson has displayed a talent for getting to the free-throw line. Now she's shown a flair for 3-pointers - five in the last three games.

"We're running an offense now that allows me to be outside a lot more, and I don't know how, but I'm knocking down 3s," she said.

Peterson won't say leadership or looking for the shot come naturally, but she isn't about to back away from the challenge, either.

"It's kind of in my blood. My parents (Darrie and Jan) were really good athletes, and I followed in the footsteps of my brother (Tyler). He's really helped me out through the years, even though we didn't play the same sports except for baseball."

Tyler, now at Bemidji, Minn., State, played baseball, hockey and football at Bismarck High before graduating last spring.

Sports are a year-around feature of Peterson's life. She's a two-time all-state volleyball player, an all-state shortstop in softball and an all-region basketball player.

She said she can't remember not being an athlete.

"I've been in sports as long as I can remember. I'm not sure if it was tee ball, hockey or gymnastics (that came first)," she said.

Century girls win
Dec 18, 2009 - By Steve Thomas Bismarck Tribune

Century 71, Mandan 62

Injuries have erased two key seniors - Erika Jossart and Madi Buck - from the Century roster. That puts a lot of weight on six-foot senior Carli Peterson's shoulders.

Peterson responded in a big way for the second time this week, scoring 23 points to lead second-ranked Century past Mandan. She tallied 28 on Tuesday in a victory at St. Mary's.

"I've worked pretty hard the last week," Peterson said. "... We've got some pretty big shoes to fill. We've only got two seniors left and we've got to step up now."

Peterson and guard Nikki Huelsman are all that's left of the senior class. Jossart is out for the season with a torn knee ligament and Buck can't play for at least two weeks with a knee meniscus problem.

With those veterans watching from the sidelines, Century struggled mightily with Mandan's patented full-court pressure. The Braves forced 21 turnovers in the first half and 35 for the game.

The defensive pressure enabled Mandan to take a 35-34 halftime lead without standout guard Steph Pedersen. Pedersen sat the final 10 minutes of the period after picking up her third foul.

Even though its floor game was a mess, Century stayed in the game through the first half with 52 percent shooting. The Patriots outshot Mandan 50 percent to 37 percent for the game.

Century got things turned around in the second half, battling through seven lead changes before finally taking a permanent lead. A.J. Jacobs' chip shot put the Patriots up 49-48 with 9:28 to play.

Mandan hung with the Patriots until the final four minutes. Ann Govig score six points as Century took off on a 10-0 run for a 69-56 lead with 1:48 left on the clock.

Peterson said she and her teammates were really frustrated at halftime, but managed to get things squared away.

"We talk a lot about keeping our emotions in check," she said. "... I think we showed that tonight."

Govig with 14 points and Huelsman and Jacobs with 12 each joined Peterson in double figures for Century. Pedersen scored 13 points in the second half and finished with 20 for Mandan. Elizabeth Meyer chipped in with 11 for the Braves.

Century stands over St. Mary's
Dec 16, 2009 - By Steve Thomas Bismarck Tribune

Century 72, St. Mary's 45

The most interesting thing about Century's blowout was the Patriots' starting lineup.

Missing were two full-time starters from last season - all-stater Madi Buck and point guard Erika Jossart.

Both were lost to knee injuries in the opening weekend of action.

Nonetheless, the Patriots raced to a 19-4 lead and led 38-23 at halftime.

Carli Peterson, a six-foot post who is a third-year starter, took command in the absence of Buck and Jossart, scoring 28 points.

"She has that ability," CHS coach Ron Metz said of Peterson's scoring eruption. "... We needed that out of Carli, and that's what she's able to do for us."

A.J. Jacobs added 14 points for the Patriots, now 2-1. Casie Gates with 13 points and Sydney Miller with 10 led the way for St. Mary's.

Metz said Jossart, who is scheduled for ACL surgery in one knee this week, won't return this season. Buck is expected back, but her status is something of an unknown.

"There's some damage to the meniscus in her knee. ... We've just got to wait and see," Metz said. "It's just going to take a little time. ... She'll be out a couple of weeks for sure."

Patriot girls lose to Bruins
Dec 5, 2009 - By Michael Weber Bismarck Tribune

The Century girls basketball team started the season on a low note Friday night.

Make that two low notes.

The Patriots not only lost to visiting Fargo South 58-50 at Lynette Olson Gymnasium, but they played almost the entire game without starting point guard Erika Jossart, who suffered a knee injury in the opening seconds.

Century coach Ron Metz said Jossart - one of four returning starters from a 2008-09 team that placed third in the state tournament - will be examined today. Jossart tore an ACL two seasons ago.

"It's the other knee this time. We'll know more (on Saturday)," Metz said. "Needless to say, she's an important part of our team. She's our point guard ... our leader on the floor. Not having her out there tonight made a big difference."

Century's offense struggled mightily without its floor general, shooting 37 percent (16-for-43) from the floor and committing 31 turnovers.

"We had a hard time getting into any sort of a rhythm on offense," Metz said. "A big part of that was Erika's absence, but this also was our first game and there were lots of first-game mistakes. The good news is most of the problems we experienced tonight can be fixed. I'm confident the girls will bounce back."

The Bruins, whose roster includes three starters from last season's state runner-up, also struggled. They shot 35 percent from the floor, with 30 turnovers.

"Both teams had a sloppy game, and that sort of thing can be expected in a season opener," South coach Craig Flaagan said. "But we did enough to get through it. We got the win and that's the most important thing."

The Bruins led 28-23 at halftime, and went on to lead 38-25 at the 11:47 mark of the second half. It was 43-32 with 7:45 to play when Century finally got rhythm. Jordan Adolf's 3-pointer with 7:18 remaining sparked a 12-4 run that pulled the Patriots within three, 47-44. Madi Buck capped the run with a 3-pointer with 4:47 to play.

After Siri Burck scored for South, Buck made one of two free throws with 2:46 remaining to make it 49-45. However, Century never got closer than four the rest of the way. Alley Fisher's 3-pointer with 2:25 to play gave South a 52-45 lead, and the Bruins went on to seal the deal with six straight free throws.

"One of the things that I liked most about tonight was how well we executed down the stretch," Flaagan said. "We had trouble making shots for most of the game, but we made some big ones late. We had trouble making free throws, but we couldn't miss late in the game. We held it together under pressure."

Flaagan also liked the way his team played defense.

"Pressure defense won us a lot of games last year," he said. "We have players who can get after it and cause lots of problems for the other teams. I think we caused lots of problems for Century."

Metz was proud of the way his team rallied in the second half.

"Usually when South has someone down by 13, it's over. Our girls never quit," he said. "We have a veteran team. They're going to keep playing until the final buzzer."

Fisher and Burck led the Bruins with 21 and 16 points, respectively. Buck had 17 points, seven rebounds and seven steals for the Patriots.
